KirkShultz-Architecture

Welcome!!

My name is Kirk H. Shultz - Architect, Designer, Builder

I am a residential, small commercial and interior specialist with over 25 years of broad ranged experience in the Design and Construction industry.

I started as a carpenter and barn builder in West Virginia in my teens. That led me to some early pioneers in the 'back to the land' solar home construction movement. I decided to go to Architecture school and graduated in 1983 from the University of Oregon. Time spent in professional offices gave me experience in Schools, Hotels, and Retail design. I completed my internship and passed the License exam (Washington State #6716)

But my heart is in the creative reuse of old structures and the residential dwelling. I built a pole frame home for my family near Portland Oregon. I moved from there some years ago and now reside in a small place with a large garden, and a home studio for doing remodels, additions and new house designs. I have recently done retail store interiors, art gallery and recording studio designs as well. I am versed in sustainable alternative and green construction. I value the time tested materials of earth, wood and stone. The social behavioral design philosophies of Christopher Alexander's Pattern Language and the Organic philosophies of Frank LLoyd Wright color my work. The freedom of Antonio Gaudi inspires as well.

Some projects let me partner with a Licensed Contractor to perform Design/Build projects. It lets me put the tool belt back on. I have been lucky to put my hands on all phases of construction. It has taught me what it takes to realize a custom design from the napkin sketch to the final inspection.

As a volunteer annually with the Oregon Country Fair (a rare craft and entertainment festival near Eugene) I help lead the construction crew in setup and have been fortunate to design and build sculptural  structures like a 230 foot long Dragon! Via my time at this Fair I have become adept at event layout, and stagecraft techniques for large scale temporary space making.

I am available for your design needs. residential, commercial, or festival event. Send me a challenge and we will make fun with it!

Be Well,

Kirk H Shultz
